50 Years of Creative Writing at UEA

Future and Form is the flagship project celebrating 50 years of creative writing at UEA. As the first UK university to introduce the discipline, UEA has been at the forefront of pioneering excellence in creative writing, with an ever-growing list of international, award-winning alumni. Over the last half-century the programme has developed across all academic levels and forms, from prose fiction to poetry, creative non-fiction, scriptwriting and crime fiction, while maintaining its position as the most prestigious programme in the UK, and in the top three in the world.

To mark the anniversary, we have drawn on that pioneering spirit and so we look forward to the next fifty years. Where might literary writing be going? How will the forms encapsulate new technologies? How can new audiences be engaged, enthralled, enlightened? Far from believing that ‘the novel is dead’, we want to enable and challenge writers and audiences of the future to consider what excellence in imaginative writing means.
